The theme of family is especially strong in this book. Readers can never get bored of Aru Shah and her commentary! Plus, she is sassy person who has some GREAT lines. She realizes that her lies point to something more positive: Aru has an amazing imagination and that is power in itself. Throughout the book, however, Aru grows tremendously as a character. She mostly lies to her classmates in order to paint her life in a better light because Aru believes that her actual life will not make her any friends. But how is one girl in Spider-Man pajamas supposed to do all that? The only way to stop the demon is to find the reincarnations of the five legendary Pandava brothers, protagonists of the Hindu epic poem, the Mahabharata, and journey through the Kingdom of Death. Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and it’s up to Aru to save them. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction. Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson series, recently announced his imprint through Disney Publishing, called “Rick Riordan Presents.” This imprint “publishes highly entertaining books by authors from underrepresented cultures and backgrounds,” which all feature mythological elements from their culture.
